Not all garage flooring tiles are created equal. Some of the lesser models will crack or dent or show wear or tear. Garage flooring tiles are great for fast installation. Simply remove all objects off the floor, sweep and start laying down your tile. You do not need any glues, backing, etc. Simply lay the tiles down, interlock them and trim a few spots that are not square in the corners.

Some garage tiles will make a noise as you drive over them but not all.  They are designed to provide a layer of insulation as well as soften the noise or acoustics of your garage.  If you are a creative type person you can design a patterned floor in your garage.  You can outline the perimeter, use a solid color in between or you can use a checkered pattern.

I’ve seen a garage that used two different types of tiles. One tile was the heavy duty for vehicles made out of polypropylene and the other was more of a rubber garage tile to help them near their bench when they are working.  It’s much easier on their knees and feet. You can find polypropylene in a variety of cool colors and different sizes.  12 x 12 is the most common but their is also 16 x 16.  Most garage tiles are sold in boxes of 40 tiles per box.  That can cover 40 sq. ft.  

Garage Flooring Tiles: Surface Patterns

Others have used surface patterns in different areas. For the parking of vehicles they used the ribbed pattern to collect oils and snow melt, smooth tiles around the vehicle parking area and diamond for areas of work.  Just keep in mind the purpose of your garage tiles.  Do you want to have the ability to roll tool boxes, shop vac’s or things like that?  If so, smooth finishes might be a better option for you.  Diamond or coin patterns are excellent no slip surfaces.  And the other pattern that is used a lot is the Tire Tread Pattern Interlocking Garage Floor Tiles.

Just remember if you choose to cover your garages floor with paint it will require some help. A garage floor paint kit or system requires a few more steps compared to painting a home and it is best if you have a couple of people helping you with coating & painter application.  Depending on the square footage of your floor, you have a couple of options available to you with your applicator.  Epoxy floor coatings can be very attactive or they can be just about as dull as your existing floor.  It all depends on the floor colors you choose.

As we said earlier, epoxy garage floor coatings can be applied by a professional installer or you can do it yourself.  The concrete garage floor paint that I have seen installed by my friends are an original color or base color of gray or tan.  Most floor coating kits don’t give you that many options if you purchase the products from places like Home Depot of Lowes.  Yes, you can special order other colors and color chips but you still have to wait for a week or two before you can begin your work.

Just keep in mind I have seen several garage floors as well as basement floors that have used the epoxy paint system.  They don’t look nearly as good as the examples in the link above but they still look good even with boring colors like gray and tan.  What sets these cement floors apart from the others is the fact that they used various different color chip flakes.  These chip flakes are sprinkled into the epoxy as it is drying and the “real” purpose is to help create adhesion while you walk.  Nobody wants a slippery garage floor especially in the winter. Just remember the chips will greatly enhance to look of your floor.

Garage Floor Paint: Steps

The steps we will list are a general synopsis of what occurs.  Please read the specific products instructions because they will vary from what is listed here:

Step 1:  your entire garage floor needs to be cleared.  Next would be to use a power sprayer and clean as much of the oil, stains and drips as you can. You can also use a clean concrete profiler.  Allow your concrete to sufficiently dry.
Step 2:  to open up the pores in the concrete that will accept and absorb your epoxy you need to etch the floor with an acid wash or gringer.
Step 3: Sweep up anything on the floor and then apply the kits primer. It is called by different names depending on the kit.
Step 4: Let primer air dry or cure overnight. The final application is your basecoat epoxy. Don’t forget to sprinkle your color chip flakes.  Some people perfer color chips-heavy broadcast.
Step 5: Usually within 24 hours or overnight in warmer climates you can then apply your final clear coat.

One of the fastest and easiest floor covering products is mats. What I do find funny is that your floor is usually gray in color and many folks end up painting their floors gray.  With all the available colors and sizes (tile sizes) option I truly wonder why people choose gray.  But it’s a personal preference and that’s the beauty of  garage floor covers. 

A few other things to remember about Epoxy garage floors they need several coats so it is best to do it all at once, unless you are patient.  You do have to clean the floor prior to painting and all items need to be removed.  It can be an expensive unless you do it yourself.  

The last garage floor covers are tiles.  Rubber tiles or vinyl tiles can also be expensive but when you are finished nothing will compare.  You want a show room appearance?  Want various patterns, need the comfort of safety, or don’t have enough money to complete your project then you might want to consider tiles.  I know a lot of friends who have taken 2 or 3 years to complete covering their garage floors with tiles.  What they do is purchase 5-10 boxes of tiles,

lay them out and when they have more money the add more.  This is the beauty of garage floor covering tiles. 

Garage Floor Covers:  Advantages or Not

Everything mentioned already will do a good job of floor protection. Each has it’s pluses and minuses. You have a plethora of sizes in floor covering. Cleaning your floor will be much  easier with these covers. Garage floor mats will be cheaper per sq. ft than garage tiles but the durability is also a factor.  Epoxy garage floors is kind of in between these prices because it truly depends on how many coats you apply to the floor.  Installation instructions are included with each type of garage floor covers so be patient and follow the directions.

You can pick up rubber garage flooring with a 30 year guarantee versus a 5 year guarantee for garage mats.  If you divide the 30 years by the 5 years it’s no comparison.  If you multiply one garage floor mat 6 times, then the price of the rubber tiles comes out way ahead.

When considering garage floor covers also take in mind that any of the three methods can be a done it when you have the money tye of thing.  Epoxy garage floors need several coats so it is best to do it all at once, unless you are patient.  With tiles you can simply add on as you go.  Same with garage floor mats.

Epoxy Garage Floor Protector

Epoxy garage floor protection is best applied when the garage is empty and clean.  It is the most expensive garage floor protector but you can soften the price by using less coats of the epoxy.  By decreasing the amount of coats you will also lose years of floor protection.

One aspect that should be mentioned about epoxy garage floor protection is snow melt. Because the paint is laid on top of the cement it is still succeptible to water puddles. Epoxy is great at protection but not so great at funneling water outside.
